- Episode 1: A Vestige From The Past

Brief Summary

As the episode opens, Krylancelo stumbles upon a horrific scene: Azalie, slowly mutating from a failed attempt to use the Sword of Baldanders. When the beast breaks free of the facility, it's nearly struck down by the Tower of Fang, but a desperate attack from Krylancelo allows for her to escape.

The episode continues much along the same lines as the first book, with a surprise cameo from Coggie. Orphen is dragged into Vulcan's marriage scam, only for the meeting to be interrupted by the monster that Azalie was turned into.

The beast steals the Sword and escapes, almost being killed by its pursuers from the Tower of Fang before Orphen casts a well-timed spell to intercept their attacks.

Notable Info

Episode Notes

  • The spell used for the Sword of Baldanders went as following. It's worth noting, however, that it failed. "I exist as both the beginning and as the end. Much like the monster named Time itself. The Soon-Another..."

  • Vulcan has at this point taken 3 months to return the money borrowed from Orphen.

  • The dragon was said to have appeared at a nearby village before reaching Totokanta.

  • Cleao's father passed away two years earlier.

  • Forte is shown to be the person who delivered the Sword of Baldanders to Ekintora, Cleao's father, five years before the series begins.

Book Differences

  • The anime makes several changes to the events that transpired in the books. Characters not yet known are introduced at the very start of the narrative. I found this an interesting choice, because while it's logical to assume those characters would be around at the Tower of Fang, it really sells their presence and importance to have them actually there in your peripheral vision.

For example, Whurl is among the members of the Tower who attack the beast (Azalie) after it first appears, and he, Suaine, Hartia, and Comicron also accompany Childman to investigate in Totokanta. While Comicron and Hartia were present for the final battle in the books, they weren't in any of the scenes leading up to it.

Childman is also shown to have come across Azalie first during the experiment, while in the books, he wasn't there (and was implied to have only gone back for the sword after the mutation had already occurred.)

  • Though she wasn't actually part of the Stray Journey story, Coggie of the Royal Security Police, a character from Reckless Journey makes a cameo appearance in the first episode, having found the criminals, Vulcan and Dortin! She attempts to apprehend them, but fumbles in her characteristic way, darting some poor passerby instead.

  • Vulcan's marriage scam lie claims the "Burplewarts" as being from Mebrenst rather than Urban Rama, claiming Orphen comes from a long-line of nobles, but now runs his own business.

  • When Cleao busts them on the marriage scam, she notes that her mother and sister were debating calling the police and retrieving weapons from the armory to teach them a lesson.

  • When the dragon crashes into the Everlasting residence, it is actually crashing into the underground warehouse, rather than the home itself. This is effectively just speeding up the events of the books, to get to the point faster. Once again, however, Orphen stops the Tower from landing their killing blow on the dragon.

Lore

  • 1,000 years ago on Kiesalhima, the Dwarves, who had lived there throughout recorded history, were chased away to the ends of the continent by dragons that had invaded. Sorcerers were then born from a union of dragons and the humans who had drifted onto the continent.

  • The spell used for the Sword of Baldanders went as following. It's worth noting, however, that it failed. "I exist as both the beginning and as the end. Much like the monster named Time itself. The Soon-Another..."
