Silence Magic

Silence Magic, also known as the "Wyrd Graphs" is a type of magic used by the Wyrd Dragons (Nornir), who stole their magic from the gods. It is frequently referred to as "ancient sorcery" by human sorcerers, and makes up almost all of the enchantments bestowed upon weapons and everyday items. It's said to be the second most powerful sorcery talent next to Destruction Magic.

Overview

Inheritance

It's said that during ancient times, six different species of beasts banded together to steal magic from the gods. The humanoid Nornir were one of those races, and for their efforts, they gained the use of Silence Magic, which allowed them to manifest magic through the use of written symbols. It's said that Silence Magic is complex, however. To activate it, one must trace the symbols with their finger, though, it's not always that simple. There are more complex methods required to activate magic, such that it would be impossible to do accidentally. In other instances, such as a ring that protects the owner from a single disaster, there is no need to truly 'activate' the symbols in the first place.

Composition and Limitations

As a written form of sorcery, Silence Magic requires foresight into its use. If you aren't able to predict a confrontation, it may be hard to actually compose a spell in time to protect yourself. What it loses in reactionary time, however, it gains back ten fold in longevity. The Wyrd Graphs make up the closest thing the world has to 'autonomous magic'. It has a near-permanency, and due to its flexibility in how it is composed, it can last for hundreds of years. For example, it doesn't matter of symbols are written on paper, carved into cloth, or engraved in metal or stone. All will be able to properly manifest the sorcery.

Assorted Facts

 •  It's said that no sorcerer has ever overcome the power of a Wyrd Graph head on.

 •  Silence Magic is so far beyond Voice Magic that people will fight and kill for the artifacts.

- Silence Majic

Silence Magic has no incantation, and thus has no names, so far as we know. They're written with unknown characters (Wyrd Graphs), often placed on an object or even able to be written in the air itself. Thus, this page will use descriptions only.

Assist

Megalith Infantry A character is written on a cloth, and placed upon a Megalith Infantry (giant golem.) It then gains the power to move, with the ability to follow orders. The caster than make another individual the commander of these golems, who can then defer command to yet again, someone else. They have no special abilities but are still quite strong.
Automatic Cooking  An automatic cooking device was stored in a ruin investigated by the Tower of Fang. However, it had broken down over time, and mistook the investigation team for ingredients, chasing them relentlessly so that they might be added to the menu.

Assorted

Spacial Transition Celestial Dolls can use spacial transitioning to instantly move from one location to another. This spell seems to take a minute to write the complex symbols for. It's estimated that they can transport people a minimum of 1,000 meters, far greater than the sorcerer's rough estimate of 10. The Demon King described the Spacial Transition of Silence Magic to be removing oneself from the timeline momentarily. This may infer a fundamentally different type of transitioning than that used by sorcerers. Something more akin to genuine teleportation.

Theater Dolls made use of this ability in the Kamisunda Theater, where many rooms had no exit at all. This allowed them to perform maintenance while keeping wandering visitors from going places they didn't belong.

Attack

Arrows The symbols create a strike of light, which then forms into countless arrows that ran down upon enemies.
Lightning Orbs These artifacts were found in the Basilicok Ruins, where these metal spheres, about 50 centimeters wide floated out of the ceiling to attack intruders. They were designed to rotate at rapid speeds, bouncing off light, which included a lot of the photothermal waves used by sorcerers. They also contained symbols for attack, which would fire powerful lightning bolts at enemies. It was only while their rotation was slowed to launch these attacks that they became vulnerable to magic.
Mind Control Those afflicted begin to move under the caster's control. Soon their mind fills with a pure white light, and deteriorates until they stare off into empty space. Mindless until they receive orders.

It's said that 'stronger dolls' (likely referring to Killing Dolls) can use this ability to take control of entire crowds of people.

Theater Dolls can also use this ability in a much more limited capacity, controlling a couple of people at a time. When they use it, the target is fatigued afterwards, which shouldn't happen with a masterful cast.
Precise Explosion This spell was used to destroy the Damsels Orisons Alenhatem Branch. It creates an explosion that unleashes a shockwave strong enough to rupture the eardrums of anyone near the building. The spell proceeds to destroy everything within a set parameter, to such a tight degree that the radius can be measured out to the inch. This is quite the unusual sight when looking at a square blast radius.
Tornado Generates a tornado that is actually closer to several nested tornados flowing among one another. The force generated by this wind is enough to bend steel frames like straw, and causes massive destruction from the rapid flinging of debris. These tornadoes may be part of the Precise Explosion, and are noted as a precursor to that ability.
White Fire Pillar When these symbols are written, they race through the air, and wherever they land they create a pillar of white fire.

Defense

Rumble Fills the air with a loud rumbling. This noise becomes so overpowering that it erases the voices of those within the effected field. Since voice magic cannot reach further than the caster's voice, it effectively renders their magic useless. In addition, the caster can choose which voice is erased. In one use case, the Killing Doll chose to suppress human voices, but not its own.
Preservation of Time Some ruins built by the Nornir are protected by Silence Magic. In these cases, firing high-powered spells at the wall will fail to affect its condition. These ruins can stand for centuries, even if they're made out of fragile materials like wood, such as in the case of the Kamisunda Theater. It's still possible to leave behind soot and other after-effects of spell burn.
