Human Sorcerers

Sorcerers are beings who are capable of knitting magical compositions to form spells. It's worth noting that the term 'sorcerer' can refer to any species with this capability, but for the sake of semantics, this article will refer specifically to human sorcerers.

Development of Abilties

A Sense of Magic

While there are many sorcerers, the actual rate of developing magic is painfully slow. It's said that it takes anywhere from several years to up to twelve to be able to become proficient at using magic. This time frame can vary person to person, but it usually doesn't vary by much. To be able to acquire a basic 'sense' of magic is said to take up five years in and of itself, creating a long-lasting roadblock into learning actual spells. This applies even to those who undergo serious training, such as the students at the Tower of Fang. However, some students, such as Orphen, have made record time, with Orphen picking up this sense in three years and four months, a short-term record.

Stages of Maturity

Sorcerers are said to have three stages of maturity.

Stage 1: The caster has only just begun to 'perceive' magic, and begin to use it. Spells at this stage can be imperfect, or weaker than expected. An example of spells used at this stage are bending light or moving a matchbox without touching it. It isn't sufficient for generating strong energy, and sorcerers at this stage aren't even able to boil water.

Stage 2: At this stage, a sorcerer is able to concentrate, focusing and amplifying their magic. This is the period where they're considered a full-fledge sorcerer, and at the Tower of Fang, they'd be awarded a pendant.

Stage 3: The third stage actually has little to do with the individual abilities of a sorcerer. Rather, this stage is for those who have carried out significant research achievements using their power. This seems to be a more scholarly role.

Reading of Magical Composition

Sorcerers learn to manipulate energy as they advance, and thereby also learn to recognize it. If a spell is successfully cast, they can read the magical composition that's released into the air during the casting. From that woven composition, they can also determine the skill of the caster, allowing sorcerers to quickly identify whether another sorcerer they're up against is properly educated or not.

Power Balance and History of Persecution

For years, sorcerers have been persecuted by human cities, and while some are accepting of sorcerers, others can be outright violent. The history of persecution will be covered in more depth down in the history section, however, it's important to mention it here. This persecution has widely been considered to stem from the fact that sorcerers are so much more powerful than their human ancestors. It's said that no amount of humans could hope to take on an average sorcerer, because of how destructive their spells can be. To humans, this represents a threat that they cannot bring themselves to ignore, regardless of the actions of sorcerers, or if those sorcerers have actually done anything to wrong them.

The Control of White Magic Sorcerers

Among sorcerers, there are said to be two types: Black-Magic Sorcerers and White-Magic Sorcerers. Though black-magic sorcerers deal with physical matters such as the elements and the body, white-magic sorcerers deal with the intangible. Matters of the mind, and the manipulation of time. They can even astral project away from their body to spy on people who have no idea they're there. White-magic sorcerers are said to be so powerful that they can take on droves of black-magic sorcerers, and because of this difference in power, they're kept completely isolated from the rest of the world in a place known as the Fog Falls, which only the King knows the location of.

History

Creation

Before there were sorcerers, there were the Wyrd Dragons, better known as the Nornir. They were one of six species who ventured to steal magic from the gods, and in doing so, passed the derivative form of this magic — 'Sorcery' — on to the other members of their tribes. However, this endeavor was met with a terrible punishment, and many species ended up worse off than they'd been before. The Nornir suffered a curse that prevented them from breeding with their own kind, and thus condemned them to an eventual death.

After many years, some of the Nornir interbred with humans, producing children who showed promise in magical capabilities. This new race of sorcerer became the Human Sorcerers, who inherited magical capabilities from their dragon parents, and developed an entirely new type of magic unto themselves: Voice Magic. This special ability would proliferate through the sorcerer race until entire societies were formed around it.
