Whurl Karlen is a teacher of the Tower of Fang, who has spent years training his students in the art of assassination. In fact, Orphen was one of his students until he was 10 years old. Though he aligns himself with the Tower, many in the Tower know that they must watch out for this scheming sorcerer.

Personality

The first master Orphen ever had, Whurl is a stern man. He's known for training Stabbers (assassins) in the Tower of Fang, and though he tries to scheme, his out-of-control students often seem to ruin his plans. Nevertheless, he seems to garner a lot of respect from his students (Hydrant not withstanding) as it seems he keeps in contact with them even after they graduate his class, and still calls in former students when needed.

Appearance

Whurl has a lightweight build and wears the typical Tower of Fang garb, with combat gear when necessary. His age shows clearly on his face, with plenty of wrinkles, and he has short gray hair.

History

Tower Career:

Whurl served as a teacher of the Tower of Fang for years. He was well known for training assassins. These assassins would become known as "Stabbers", a term that to this day strikes fear into those who hear it.

The Browning Family's World Book:

Rumors started spreading around Taphrem that the local Dragon Faith had gained possession of the World Book, a powerful artifact said to contain the end of life itself, along with all of the world's secrets.

Whurl Karlen was dead set on acquiring this book, hoping to gain access to true god magic. However, he wasn't the only one. Inferred to be under his command, students of his class ambushed a Dragon Faith meeting, only to realize that the group had already been interogated. They decided to interogate them as well, only, they murdered every member of the group to prevent the further spread of information. Not before discovering, however, that the book had fallen into Childman's hands five years prior. This turned their sights towards the Childman class.

Soon after, when it was realized that Forte Packingum was looking into the situation with a suspicious eye turned towards Whurl, he sent a student of his, Vinvi Sottaul, to apply for Forte's request for a secret agent. He got the job, and began meeting with Whurl to pass along information, though Forte was aware of this.

When it came to light that the World Book may be stored in the McCready Mansion, Whurl sent Suaine to steal it in the night. However, they were intercepted by Orphen and Cleao. He tried once again to acquire the book by sending the two to interrogate the Childman Class. Only, Hydrant, being the loose cannon that he is, made a bigger mess than anticipated, while also failing to acquire any additional info. They did, however, return with the knowledge that Azalie was not, in fact, dead, like everyone had been told.

The Last Resort:

With Hydrant's slip up, Whurl was forced to make his move. Should word return to the Tower of Fang that a senior sorcerer had been harmed, it would be too late for them to carry out their plans. So, it was decided that they would make a move to eliminate everyone from the Childman Class, and anyone who had seen their faces. His critical mistake was trusting Hydrant, who had little loyalty to his former Master.

Defeat:

Though Whurl's students began to move, he himself waited in the classroom, along with many of the other students. It was considered a crime for large numbers of sorcerers to mobilize at the same time, so they planned to deploy a few at a time instead. Hydrant, Vinvi, and Suaine were sent to kill the guards and take out the intruders. All were defeated, with Hydrant being apprehended, Vinvi being knocked out, and Suaine returning to Whurl with the World Book before his injuries claimed his life.

When Orphen finally showed up, Whurl was surrounded by his remaining students, and prepared to kill him to settle the matter. Understandably, his rage skyrocketed when he realized that the book Suaine had returned to him was a fake. He mobilized his students against Orphen. One was killed outright when Forte showed up, and with Azalie also joining the party, Whurl was forced to pause the battle. He was faced with charges of treason against the Tower of Fang, and once he realized that Hydrant had sold him out as an Elder who could sign an arrest order, Whurl refused to let his classroom fall in such a fashion. He attacked Orphen himself, but was instantly taken down by one of Childman's secret techniques. He survived, but was presumeably arrested, as Forte had always intended.

Skills

Stabber Training:

As the Master who has trained almost every Stabber in the Tower of Fang, Whurl has excellent combat abilities. Had he not been so enraged by having lost the World Book, and been faced with such complications in his plan, it's possible that his battle against Orphen would have gone very differently. His combat skills were not explored in depth.

Assorted Facts

 • Hydrant is considered to be the best student Whurl has ever trained.
 • Whurl himself is considered to be the strongest Stabber of the Tower of Fang.
